THINKING OF INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE OR EXPANDING YOUR PORTFOLIO?

If you are thinking of investing in real estate or expanding your portfolio, here are book recommendations from Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett, tailored especially for the Ugandan and African investor.
Charlie and Warren should be the ultimate guides for any investor. Thousands of fans, including many who don't even own Berkshire Hathaway stock, flock to Omaha every year for the company's annual shareholders meeting. In 2023 alone, over 40,000 people attended! Berkshire Hathaway, the $900 billion conglomerate they built together, stands as a testament to disciplined investing without excessive debt or risk.
Why should you care about their advice?
Well, for starters, Warren Buffett is now 95 years old. He launched his first investment partnership in 1956, before most African nations had even gained independence. Together, he and Charlie have weathered multiple recessions that wiped out other investors, yet they emerged stronger each time.
So what does all this have to do with real estate?
Buffett's conglomerate owns Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, the largest real estate brokerage in the United States, and Clayton Homes, the biggest builder of modular and manufactured homes in the country. Clearly, there's plenty for real estate investors to learn from these two titans.
Let's dive in.
These book recommendations are drawn from Alex W. Morris's 2025 release Buffett and Munger Unscripted, which compiles their responses from Q&A sessions at Berkshire Hathaway meetings dating back to 1994.
You might be surprised to learn that Warren Buffett only seriously recommends two books to master the art of investing, and from those, only three chapters in total!
The Three Key Chapters:
-
Chapter One of The General Theory by the late British economist John Maynard Keynes
-
Chapters Eight and Twenty of The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, Buffett's mentor and first employer

Disclaimer.
Warren and Charlie are wise, but not infallible. Muslim investors should avoid investing in insurance and interest-based companies, as these are impermissible under Sharia law. For example, while Charlie famously said to avoid "three things: ladies, liquor, and leverage," both he and Warren invested in banks that contributed to the subprime mortgage crisis in the U.S.
